We believe in the importance of quality control at every stage of wine production, from their beginnings (in the vineyard) to bottling and shipping to you. That’s one reason why almost all of our wines are made from our own vineyard sites, which number seven at present.
Lemelson Vineyards includes seven different certified organic vineyards
We have high standards for our farming practices, which are certified
organic by Oregon Tilth, and we strive to improve the health of our
soils, as well as the ecosystems that our vineyards are a part of. We
also work hard to manage our vineyard canopies to let natural forces,
such as the sun and the wind, keep diseases that affect vine health and
wine quality at bay.
A second, equally important reason why we own and manage seven distinct
vineyard sites is Oregon’s climate. In cool years, lower elevation
sites have a much better chance to ripen grapes before fall rains begin
with a vengeance. In hot years, higher elevation sites benefit from
their cooler
temperatures, and often make the most elegant wines. Our vineyards span
the full range of elevations planted in the Willamette Valley, from 240
feet to nearly 950 feet above sea level.
And finally, we come to soils, a central element in determining
terroir (site uniqueness). Our vineyards are in three of the major
A.V.A.s (American Viticultural Areas, or viticultural subregions) and
encompass the major soil types that help determine the unique character
of Pinot noir.
