Chestnut Hill Vineyard Pinot Noir
Sitting high on a hill overlooking Mt. Hood and the northern Willamette Valley, the Chestnut Hill Vineyard is one of our favorites. That’s because of the special qualities of the wines that it produces, and also because it was the first vineyard that founder Eric Lemelson planted over ten years ago. In fact, Dorothy Lemelson “invested” in the vines for Eric’s first vineyard block, and she continues to receive “dividends” in the form of the first cases from the vineyard every year!

Chestnut Hill sits at an elevation of 800-950 feet on Jory and Nekia soils, which are essentially weathered lava flows from the Cascade volcanoes millions of years ago. This vineyard’s southern exposure and cool night temperatures produce wines with vibrant acidity, red fruit character (red cherry, raspberry, and strawberry) and, dare we say it, a structure and balance that remind us a bit of some of our favorite Burgundies. As of fall 2006, the dry-farmed vineyard contains seven acres of mature Pinot noir and Pinot gris, and an additional eight acres of young vines. We like the wines produced from Chestnut Hill so much (especially in warm years) that we are planting additional acreage here in 2007 and 2008. |
